HVAC with Foam Board

Low Profile HVAC with added Foam Board

These photos feature a project where the customer wanted to completely hide her low profile duct system and also achieve maximum efficiency. After the metal duct system was installed, rigid foam board was stacked along side the air ducts in a couple of layers. As a result, the roof appeared to increase in thickness or step-up uniformly in terraces. The 1.5" thick foam roof system over 4" - 8" of rigid insulation board retain over 99% of the energy that would potentially be lost through the home's roof surface. This home's interior aesthetics & functionality also improved as a result of the HVAC upgrade. Removing the old baseboard radiant heaters allowed the home owner to push furniture flat against the walls.

Why Use Foam Boards with HVAC?

HVAC is pronounced either "H-V-A-C" or "H Vac" by contractors in the USA. HVAC stands for: Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning. Some large HVAC systems would require large quantities of sprayed foam to encapsulate things seamlessly. Lower cost pre-manufactured spray foam boards can be used to raise up the level of the roof to cut down on the quantity of sprayed foam required (since sprayed foam is more expensive than pre-manufactured foam boards). A top layer of sprayed foam is then used to create a seamless, leak-proof, insulating, monolithic roof membrane. A final layer of cool roof coating makes the roof energy-star compliant (for reflective coatings).
